Computing Facilities

Department of Computer Science (CS) is equipped with state-of-the-art computing facilities, including a high-end server cluster with enterprise-grade GPUs like the NVIDIA H800, interconnected via 400Gb/s InfiniBand switches. This powerful cluster supports the execution of Large Language Models (LLMs) for advanced AI research projects. Additionally, students in the division gain hands-on experience in AI studies through access to a dedicated server cluster featuring over 300 mid-range GPUs, such as the NVIDIA GeForce 4080 Super.

CS also has over 80 Linux servers, including 66 Dell PowerEdge rackmount and tower servers, 14 HP ProLiant rackmount servers. The Linux servers are installed with Ubuntu Linux operating system, Apache servers, Tomcat servers, MySQL database servers and various software development tools.

 

All computers in the department are connected by a Gigabit Ethernet backbone, which is connected to the Internet via the HKU Campus Network.

 

Computer Laboratories

 

Department of Computer Science (CS) has two special-purpose computer laboratories for teaching, namely, Cyber Security Laboratory and Metaverse Innovation Laboratory. The Cyber Security Laboratory has specific hardware and software for teaching the subject, whereas the Metaverse Innovation Laboratory is equipped with various virtual reality systems, such as HTC VIVE, Microsoft HoloLens, Oculus Rift, etc., and an OptiTrack Prime 13 motion tracking system.

 

Besides, the division also has two general-purpose computer laboratories for conducting tutorials and workshops.  Each of them is equipped with a desktop PC with webcam, a laser/LCD projector, and a microphone to support lecturing.  Other facilities include networked multifunction printers and WiFi access points.  These two computer laboratories are opened 7×24.  Students of the department can use them for study purposes when they are not in use for teaching.

 

 

Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science (SAAS) is well supplied with computing facilities. There is a departmental computer laboratory for teaching and research. The computer laboratory is equipped with 56 computers, all connected to high-performance servers for simulation. SAAS staff and students have access to various statistical and mathematical software such as SAS, SPSS, MATLAB, R, Python, etc, whilst software for writing scientific manuscripts such as TeX and MS Office are also provided. Other facilities include the networked printer, multifunction photocopiers, etc. With the GPU specific high-speed servers and enhanced capacity of our Storage Area Network, the computer laboratory has been actively used to leverage collected data to support teaching and research in different areas.

Thursday 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 4:30 p.m. to 5:50 p.m.
Friday 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 12:30 p.m. to 5:50 p.m.
Saturday Closed

These rooms are reserved for the students taking courses of Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science which required using the Computer Laboratory in the current semester. Please bring your student card for inspection. Other students are not allowed to use the computers in these rooms. Details for the regulation of use of computer laboratory please refer to RR101’s noticeboard.

Laser Printout Service is available from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. on Monday to Friday.

Users require to purchase a Laser Printout Coupon in the General Office (RR303) for collecting the printout. Cost of a coupon is HK$20 that is not refundable. Each coupon can collect 50 pages of printout. Details of the rules and regulations are printed in the back of each coupon. You can send the print job to ‘RR102-HP LaserJet P4015N’ when you select page setup and get back the printout in RR102.
